Don’t attempt to talk to a man who is not listening, who is writing an email or occupying himself in any other way while you are talking. If he can’t give you his attention, say to him: “I see that you are busy. If you can give me your attention for a few minutes I’d appreciate it. But I don’t want to interrupt you if you can’t spare the time, and I’ll call again.” Put yourself in his place from the very start. Make him feel, not that you are trying to force your business upon him, but that you want to discuss how his business may be benefited by you.
